Noah has successfully defended his MSc thesis "Understanding the molecular basis of Rab-GEF activity and specificity of the mammalian TRAPP complexes'. Congrats Noah!

After several delays due to Covid, Sushant has joined the lab from India as PhD student. We are happy to have you here!

Manoj has succesfully defended his PhD thesis "“Molecular basis for the regulation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase 𝛄 (PI3K𝛄)" and is off to India to be with family before starting his postdoctoral work. We will miss you Manoj! 

- July 2021 - 

Noah's paper on TRAPPIII was accepted to JMB, and Manoj and Kaelin's papers on PI3Ky were accepted into Structure and Science advances. Manoj was also a contributing author to "Accurate prediction of protein structures and interactions using a three-track neural network" published in Science. Great work everyone!

Edward has successfully defended his MSc thesis “Carbohydrate Processing: An Indispensable Platform of Pneumococcal Virulence”. Congrats Ed!

Kaelin is leaving the lab to complete her MSc in Public Health at the University of British Columbia. Good luck with your new career, you will be missed!

Brandon is leaving to study Nursing at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Good luck Brandon, thanks for all of your help with the Mass Spec!

Matthew Parson has joined the lab as the new mass spec lab technician. Welcome Matt! 

Josephs directed studies work was published in the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. He is now leaving to pursue a PhD at the MRC LMB in Dr Venki Ramakrishnan's lab. Good luck Joseph!

Jacob has successfully defended his PhD thesis “Molecular mechanisms of phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase III beta (PI4KB) regulation and their role in human disease”. Jacob has taken a position as a R&D Scientist at StressMarq Biosciences Inc. Good luck with the new job!

Meredith has successfully defended her MSc thesis "Structural and Biochemical Investigation of the Regulation of Rab11a by the Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factors SH3BP5 and TRAPPII”. Meredith is staying on as Lab Manager for the lab 

John was the recipient of the 2018-2019 University of Victoria Award for Research Excellence.

John was awarded a grant from the Cancer Research Society (CRS) to continue work on defining the molecular mechanism of activation of oncogenes in the Akt pathway.

Gillian has successfully defended her PhD thesis "Defining the Molecular Mechanisms Mediating Class IA Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) Regulation and their Role in Human Disease” and is off to Germany for her Postdoc. We will miss you!

Gillian Dornan has received a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue her research in Germany at the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP). Congrats Gill!

The HDX-MS conference John organized was held in Banff. Meredith gave a talk, while Jacob, Reece and Jordan all had posters. Great job everyone!

In recognition of his exceptional early career research on phosphoinositide kinases, John has received the Michael Smith Scholar Award.

Gillian, Jacob and Manoj are presenting their work at the Keystone Symposia on Phosphoinositide Biology: New Therapeutic Targets beyond Class I PI3K in New Mexico.

Manoj, Meredith, and Braden's collaborative work with Daniel Gentile from Kevan Shokat's laboratory on the identification and characterisation of novel Ras inhibitors published in Cell Chemical Biology.

John has been awarded with the ASBMB Walter Shaw Young Investigator Award to be presented at the annual ASBMB meeting in San Diego. John can be seen receiving the award on the left. Also Meredith left her technician days behind to start graduate studies in the lab.

Jacob has been awarded an NSERC doctoral scholarship to continue his work on PI4K. Great work Jacob!

Braden, Manoj and Meredith's paper on the activation of class IA PI3Ks by membrane localised HRas published in JBC. Coincides with Braden being accepted into medical school at the same time. Congrats all around!

The collaborative project examining malarial inhibitors from Dr. Stuart Schreiber's laboratory was just published in Nature. Congratulations to Jacob

and Gillian. The work was also written up in BBC news!

John just returned from giving a talk at the Phospholipase A2 meeting in La Jolla honouring his previous supervisor Ed Dennis. The photo to the left showcases all of the former Dennis lab trainees over the years.

Melissa and Jacob's paper in J Med Chem has been accepted. This collaboration with the Shokat lab at UCSF discusses our use of structure guided drug design to make new PI4KB inhibitors.

First last author paper from the group published in Protein Science. Also first paper published with the new mass spectrometer. Congratulations to Melissa, Jacob, and Meredith!

PTEN HDX-MS paper published today in Biochemical Journal from John's postdoc.

First paper from the lab out today. A hopefully useful review on the use of HDX-MS to probe protein lipid assemblies. Also one of the last projects from John's postdoc published today in Science. The first experiments for this project were run in 2009!

The new mass spectrometer has arrived, time to get some H/D exchange experiments running.

Melissa is officially leaving us for medical school at UBC. We wish her the best of luck. Melissa was

the first researcher in the lab and has been an amazing asset in getting the lab equipped and the

first research projects up and running.
